Our work is focused on the provision of accessible and innovative photography productions in collaboration with national and international partners across the visual arts, cultural, heritage and community sectors. Our productions focus on creating high quality opportunities to experience photography, locally and internationally, in an engaged and inspiring way .
Our productions incorporate exhibitions, publications, tours, workshops, conferences and talks. We also provide business development advice, mentorship and support for organisations and artists working in the creative industries. Our work also incorporates residency, workshop and bursary opportunities for artists.
Northern Narratives Studios was founded in 2017 by Photographer Ken Grant and Arts Director Tracy Marshall and was initially based in Ireland. The organisation has since based itself in England, Wales and France and has been constituted as a CIC since 2018.
The Northern Narratives team aim to provide open, transparent, accessible and inspiring opportunities to experience photography and to create platforms which enable access to photography in varied and innovative ways.
We are a small team of full time, part time and freelance collaborators. Our core team are:
Executive Director: Tracy Marshall-Grant
Tracy is an Arts Director, Curator & Producer specialising in the production of photography exhibitions, festivals, education, and archive projects. She was Deputy Director of the Centre for British Photography, Director of Development for the Royal Photographic Society and previously directed Bristol Photo Festival and LOOK Photo Biennial in Liverpool. Tracy has also been Director of Development at Open Eye Gallery Liverpool and Executive Director at Belfast Exposed Gallery. Tracy is associate and guest lecturer on professional practice modules for the BA and MA photography courses at several universities in the UK. She is a judge and advisor for several Awards including British Journal of Photography Portrait of Britain, Photo London Student Photography Award and The Ian Parry Award. Tracy is currently Head of Capital Campaigns for National Museums Liverpool working on the development of their new museums and gallery spaces for their Waterfront Transformation Project at Royal Albert Dock.

Ken was born in Liverpool in 1967. Since the 1980’s he has photographed in the city and engaged in sustained projects both in the UK and in wider Europe. A monograph of the Liverpool pictures, The Close Season, was published by Dewi Lewis Publishing in 2002 followed by No Pain Whatsoever and Flock in 2014 and A Topical Times for These Times in 2016. His most recent book, Benny Profane, was published in 2019 by RRB Publishing. He continues to work on long term projects whilst Director of MFA Photography at Ulster University. Ken Grant’s photographs are held in important collections of photography, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Folkwang Museum, Essen, the Parr Foundation, Bristol , The Hyman Collection, London and other international public and private collections.
